Leeds' Christian Film-makers Go National
THE SPELL, the third feature film from award winning Christian writer/director Owen Carey Jones of Leeds based Carey Films, will be screened at Vue, The Light, Leeds from 2 October 2009. This follows the success of A Mind of Her Own which premiered at The Light in 2006 and went on to receive international critical acclaim. THE SPELL will also be screened at fifteen cinemas across the country including the West End of London.
Based on a true story, THE SPELL is a terrifying account of Jenny, a young girl who finds herself unwanted by either of her separated parents during the formative years of her life and leaves home at the earliest opportunity. However, live-in boyfriend Rick’s associations with witchcraft and black magic soon take her down a path which leads to the most horrific experience of her young life. She seeks help from friends, doctors,
psychiatrists and religious leaders but finds only scepticism and disbelief. Finally, from within the confines of a mental hospital, she finds help where she least expects it.
Employing a mix of local and national cast and crew, THE SPELL was shot entirely in and around Leeds and features notable locations including Kirkstall Abbey and Leeds Parish Church. Organizations such as d_store, Browns, Caffe Nero, Mint Club and Leeds West North West Homes also provided authenticity.
THE SPELL stars Rebecca Pitkin and Pietro Herrera, with strong support from Julia Curle and Amber Hodgkiss who played Eleanor Smith in GRANGE HILL.
Shot with a RED ONE 35mm 4K Digital Cinema camera, THE SPELL was one of
the first feature films in the UK to be shot with this camera but will be transferred to 35mm to facilitate the roll out of the film nationally.
