Education Hope Given by Leeds Charity

RETAS

Refugee Education and Training Advisory Service  work closely with refugees and asylum seekers as well as the wider community in West Yorkshire to make sure refugees and asylum seekers reach their potential.

Soon after arriving in the UK, Rob came to RETAS (Refugee Education and Training Advisory Service) Leeds dissolusioned, distressed, lonely and with little hope for the future. He took part in the Empowerment course and thrived in the small group environment in which he could share experiences and learn about communicating them. He volunteered as a schools advocate, at first speaking in French with an interpreter, and as his English improved, presenting English.

RETAS advisors encouraged him to set goals and aim to requalify as an Engineer in the UK. Whilst volunteering on reception to improve confidence, practice English and discover the UK work culture, Rob completed the IELTS course and with the help of an advisor applied to study Engineering at University. RETAS appealed to the university requesting that he might pay home fees and this was granted. To contribute towards the fees Rob was awarded an equal access grant, but this was not enough. RETAS applied for support from the a Charity and he was awarded funds to cover all fees and provide a small amount of extra support.

Although Rob is still an asylum seeker waiting for his decision from the home office we were delighted that recently he received permission to work. With volunteering experience, English qualifications, confidence and a renewed hope, Rob is now looking for part time work alongside his studies. Rob said: “RETAS has changed my life, they have given me hope and invested so much in me. RETAS is my family, my home.”
