General Election prayer diary is published
Christian campaigning and resources charity Care has produced a prayer for Parliament diary covering the whole of the 2010 General Election campaign.
PRAYERS FOR PARLIAMENT
Week One - Your Local Constituency
Tuesday 13 April
Pray that hustings events will be well attended and that candidates will be impacted by the views of local Christians.
Wednesday 14 April
Pray for wisdom and God’s guidance as you consider who to vote for.
Thursday 15 April
Pray for the safety of volunteers canvassing, delivering leaflets and campaigning in public places.
Week Two – Political Parties & Policy Issues
Friday 16 April
Almighty God, may the issues that are raised during this election campaign be those that are on your heart. Amen.
Saturday 17 April
Remember those who communicate on behalf of the parties. Pray that they put their message across with clarity and integrity.
Sunday 18 April
Pray for Christian believers in positions of authority within the political parties.
Monday 19 April
Pray for Christian groups within political parties.
Tuesday 20 April
Thank God that issues of marriage, the sanctity of human life and religious freedoms currently have a high profile.
Wednesday 21 April
Pray that all the political parties consider how the UK can become a fairer and more compassionate society.
Thursday 22 April
Remember the smaller political parties and independent candidates, as they try to compete with the major players. Ask God to restrain those who hold extreme or offensive views.
Week Three – The Media
Friday 23 April
Lord of all truth and light, we pray that those involved in reporting during this election campaign communicate in unbiased and accurate ways. Amen.
Saturday 24 April
Pray for national and local newspaper editors to be discerning and fair during the campaign.
Sunday 25 April
Pray about the influence of ‘new media’ on the electorate; that blogs and other internet communications will be used responsibly.
Monday 26 April
Remember producers and editors of news and current affairs programmes on radio, television and the Internet.
Tuesday 27 April
Pray that party political broadcasts and high-profile debates between leaders will prove to be effective tools to motivate people to vote.
Wednesday 28th April
Pray for those in national and local political party offices preparing press releases, interviews and Internet publicity about their campaigns.
Thursday 29 April
Ask God to grant wisdom and opportunities to Christian organisations, publishers and churches engaging in public debate about important moral and social issues through local and national media.
Week Four – Party Leaders & Candidates
Friday 30 April
Heavenly Father, we commit to You every candidate standing for election, their families and their supporters. Amen.
Saturday 1 May
Pray for the safety and welfare of party leaders and other politicians, as they travel and campaign throughout the country.
Sunday 2 May
Remember the candidates standing in your constituency, asking God to bless and guide them.
Monday 3 May
Pray that hundreds of churches around the country will work together to organise hustings events.
Tuesday 4 May
Pray for the Party leaders to be able to present their beliefs and proposals clearly in debates on radio, television and the internet.
Wednesday 5 May
Ask God to inspire local churches and individual Christians to pray for Party leaders and other candidates.
Thursday 6 May - DAY OF ELECTION
Pray that Christian candidates will be bold and eloquent in how they respond to issues and questions that have important moral and ethical implications. Pray that people will come out and use their vote, that God’s person would be elected into office today, for peace and for righteousness to prevail.
Week Five – After the Election
Friday 7 May
Almighty God, please give wisdom and understanding to our Queen as she invites the new Prime Minister to form her new Government. Amen
Saturday 8 May
Pray that every new MP would realise their need of God’s guidance and strength.
Sunday 9 May
Remember parliamentary staff members whose MPs were not elected, as they wind up their jobs and clear their offices.
Monday 10 May
Pray for the Prime Minister as he decides who to appoint to the Cabinet and other government posts.
Tuesday 11 May
Pray for members of the security and administrative staff at the House of Commons, as they get to know the hundreds of new MPs.
Wednesday 12 May
Ask God to encourage former MPs who have now lost their seats, as they consider the next phase of their lives.
Thursday 13 May
Give thanks to God for all He has done in our nation over the last few weeks. Pray that He will equip the new Prime Minister and his Government as they begin their term of office.
