A word from Gildersome Baptist Church
Your name: David Newton
Job title/role in the city:
New Minister at Gildersome Baptist Church
What’s your mission? To reach people who don’t yet know Jesus.
What brought you to Leeds?
My mum when I was 9 days old
What’s God doing with you in the city right now?
11 years ago God took me from Bramley, where we had run Radio Cracker for the whole city, to Bradford, now He’s brought me back to Leeds. This time I’m in Gildersome where I learnt to preach 35 years ago. I’ve always felt called to be the minister there but it has never been possible. Now God has at last declared the time to be right and I can see that His timing is perfect.
How would you like to see Leeds change?
I’d like to see the churches visibly present on the streets using creative arts.
What’s the best thing about Leeds?
Life and energy
….and the worst?
It reminds me of Ninevah – so many people who ‘don’t know their left hand from their right’
Is there anything you need volunteers/funding for? How can people contact you or help your mission?
For Christmas I’d love to organise a couple of mass street dramas in the City Centre and Junction 27. We’d send Mary and Joseph down the street looking for somewhere to stay, from the Town hall we’d send a team of shepherds interacting with people asking if they’d seen a baby and showing their phone videos of the angels, from Eastgate we’d send some Kings looking for the baby with images of the star on their phones, and Herod’s goons might get a spot.
Mad?
Yes, but wouldn’t it be great.
If you’re interested in joining in then email me david@gbchurch.co.uk – If there are enough of us I’ll get us together in the autumn to make it happen.
