Update from Living Oasis
Below is a letter from the manager of Living Oasis:
Dear Friend
I’d like to know how we can work more closely with the local churches and meet your resource needs. The response from everyone has been so encouraging and I thank you for your continued support and prayers. I am very passionate about having a Christian presence on the High Street.
As those who attended our church leader’s meeting at St George’s will know, we are looking for new premises which will support the Living Oasis vision going forward with a café and more facilities. This is not easy and in the meantime it means we have extended the lease on the current premises for a further three months.
Some updates which you may be able to benefit from:
- We are now able to accept book tokens and sell book tokens
-
We can offer discounts on bulk orders over £150
-
Free postage on orders over £25
-
Loyalty scheme – 1 stamp for every £15. Get 6 stamps and then redeem the card worth £10 off your next purchase.
-
Facebook site which is regularly updated with offers and events
What other ways can you support us?
-
Encouraging everyone to come and visit us (just 3 minutes walk from Primark)
-
Buying church resources and regular dated orders from us
-
Invite me to church meetings to talk about the “Living Oasis” vision
Events for your diary at the Living Oasis shop:
-
Prayer breakfast first Monday of each month at 8.30 for coffee and croissants starting 4th October 2010, !st November
-
Student Nooma night with Chilli Thursday 7th October 2010
Our vision is:
“To provide a Christian presence on our High Streets, connecting with Christians and non Christians, fulfilling a mission objective and providing a resource for Churches as they seek to impact their local communities”
Looking forward to seeing you over that cup of coffee. Please give me a call or email to let me know when you can visit.
Blessings
Karen

| | | Dan King (Guest) | 11/07/2010 21:07 | I think this is a bold and daring venture and I'm grateful to Living Oasis for taking over in Leeds where Wesley Owen have had to leave off. I also like the coffee shop, lounge and children's play area ideas mentioned on your website.
I don't know if you're looking for suggestions at this point, but I think there's some other things you might need to do as well though if, as it says on your website, you really want to attract non-Christians as well as Christians:
1. Find a location closer to the city centre, where people will notice you rather than having to go looking - difficult I know as city centre rates must be pretty expensive!
2. Sell a broader range of books/materials - include stuff that people who aren't initially interested in Christianity will want to read, including stuff that isn't explicitly Christian. I think that just being completely surrounded by Christian stuff will probably be enough to stop most people from coming in.
3. Change the name and the logo - sorry, but they might be OK for Christians, but compared to most shops on the high street I think they look and sound pretty cheesy! :-(

We have located a site which we are negotiating on at the moment in the Centre of Leeds which will make an excellent coffee shop, bookstore/resource centre and meeting rooms. The logo will be different and we are looking to sell a wider range of products. Please call me at the store to discuss further Karen
