CAoP: Write to your local bishop about the Living Wage!

Churches in your area may be paying poverty wages - take action now!

LivingSeveral of the UK's denominations are now requiring or recommending churches to pay their workers the Living Wage. This has already lifted a significant number of lay workers out of ‘in-work poverty’. However, neither the Church of England nor the Roman Catholic church has made serious steps towards paying their lowest-paid workers a Living Wage.

If you are a Catholic or a member of the Church of England, please email your bishop now and ask for his commitment to the Living Wage!
The Living Wage is calculated by an independent body which thoroughly investigates what is an adequate standard of living in the UK. It is now £7.85 an hour in London, £7.15 in Scotland, or £7.60 an hour elsewhere. We want to make sure our church bodies are not paying people poverty wages.

Many people in the church are unaware of the situation of some of their workers. If this is brought to their attention, we can make a big difference to the lives of many low-paid church workers. If the church leads by example, then will have more authority in encouraging businesses and other organisations to pay the Living Wage.

The church has a responsibility to the people it employs. If the church lives in the spirit of the gospels then its staff should expect to be cared for. Many church employees work only a few hours a week, so the amount of extra money is relatively small.

Not a Catholic or a member of the Church of England? Then please forward this message to your friends who are!
Best wishes
