News Release 31 January 2011

Explorer Scouts at morning worship on Sunday 30 January 2011 at St Andrew’s, Roundhay, United Reformed Church have led the congregation in making personal pledges to help save the environment. The Explorers were speaking in place of a sermon to a capacity congregation at a parade service at the church in Shaftesbury Avenue in Roundhay in Leeds.

Explorer Leader, Matt Horsey explained:

“Explorers want people to take better care of God’s creation. If everyone in the world consumed at the rate of the average European, we’d need three planets for the present population of the Earth to live on.

“After one explorer read from Genesis about God’s creation of mankind, and we laid out certain facts about the environment and global warming, we asked each person in the congregation to write a personal pledge of action in 2011 on leaf-shaped pieces of paper.

“The Beaver Scouts collected the pledges. We stuck them on a wooden cutout tree we had made. The pledges covered the tree so that it looked to be in full bloom. Pledges included using the bus instead of driving, recycling more, and using less fuel at home. These are simple things that will have a big effect.”

Rev David Pickering, Minister of St Andrew’s added:

“The Explorers brought home powerfully and simply the damage to the environment and that each of us can make a huge difference. We thank God for their talent and commitment.

“Each of our uniformed organisations takes a part in leading our worship. Next it’s the Brownies on Sunday 20 March.”
