Involve works with 12 young people (aged 11-14) a day who are nearing exclusion from mainstream school. They are some of the more challenging yet promising young people in Leeds.
The young people are intelligent, honest, enthusiastic, humorous, positive and caring. But they also have to deal with being excluded from mainstream society and often come to us damaged, challenging, hard to reach and difficult to engage. The majority come from areas of Leeds that face deprivation on a day to day basis and this is reflected in their outlook on life.
Involve provides the young person with a safe, secure and welcoming environment to enjoy themselves and move forward in their education and personal development.
The Involve team works passionately to give the young people the tools and skills they need to realise their own potential. Our programmes work holistically with each young person and aims to address the root causes of disaffection. Programmes are designed to engage the young person, setting them up to succeed rather than to fail.
A year 8 girl was referred to Involve, she lived with her mum and her attendance record at school was below 30%, her behaviour was disruptive. When she first came, she had no motivation in life. Through small group work, encouragement and focused target setting, her behaviour and attitude improved. Her attendance was 98%. She left Involve and is in the process of getting back into school on a reduced timetable with extra support. She now dreams of being a policewoman or an ambulance driver or even going to Africa to help care for the orphans!
