WYSOCS: Spring '11 news and events
Dear friends,
I hope you’ll be encouraged to read what WYSOCS is up to this spring!
1) The Sexes and the Kingdom
2) Report on The Gospel’s Green Light conference
3) Mark to speak at Unbelievable: The Conference
4) Faith-in-Scholarship:raising funds for a Christian postgraduate students’ support worker
5) Prayer meeting
1. Bookings are now open for the WYSOCS Summer Lectures on Fri 10 and Sat 11 June, entitled The Sexes and the Kingdom. Mary Stewart van Leeuwen is a professor of Psychology and Philosophy at Eastern University in Pennsylvania and will be coming to Leeds to give three talks:
1) A Preference for People: C.S. Lewis’ journey through the great gender divide (Fri 10 June, 7.30 pm)
2) Men From Earth, Women From Earth: Gender psychology comes of age (Sat 11 June, 9.30am)
3) Courtship and Marriage for the 21st Century: Cautionary tales and case studies (Sat 11 June, 11.15am)
These will take place in Holy Trinity Church, Boar Lane in Leeds city centre, and you can book all three for just £18 (£10 concessions). Put the dates in your diary, invite friends – and be prepared to hear stereotypes challenged!
2. The Gospel’s Green Light - our day conference two weeks ago was a stimulating event where we welcomed a number of people new to WYSOCS. There’s a brief report on the day online, along with some photos and links to resources. You can also download a couple of the presentations here. We thank Christian Ecology Link, the John Ray Initiative and A Rocha for their support – and Anthony Smith for playing the organ as we sang “This is My Father’s World” to finish.
3. Mark is excited to be invited to speak at Unbelievable: The Conference, a Premier Christian Radio event on apologetics on 14 May. Alongside Dr John Lennox, David Robertson and David Instone-Brewer, Mark will address questions of pluralism and suffering.
4. Faith-in-Scholarship is a new project to run alongside LifeMatters and RealityBites. Britain’s universities recruit some of the most capable and talented students from the UK and overseas for master’s and PhD degrees – people who may go on to careers of great cultural, commercial, political and academic influence. However, there’s a serious risk that a student from a Christian background may never encounter fellow Christians in their specialist subject with whom to discuss their discipline and its philosophy, and their potential for redemptive influence. WYSOCS believes this is a bigger problem than most Christians realise, and Faith-in-Scholarship aims to help redress it. We’re seeking £40,000 to employ a postgrads’ support worker who will visit Christian postgrads’ groups around the country, encourage the formation of new ones and help Christians in universities to network with each other. Please get in touch if you can help or would like to know more. Like the gap year Thinking Space which we ran from 2003 to 2006, this project aims to excite younger people with WYSOCS’ vision, and to provide links between RealityBites and LifeMatters.
5. Finally, our next prayer meeting will be on Monday 9th May – after the May Day Holiday. It would be good to see you there.
I wish you a joyful Easter season.
Richard.
