Climate Loan Sharks - Take Action

Our new Climate Loan Sharks report with the World Development Movement lays bare how rich countries are pushing $1.1bn of World Bank loans on impoverished countries affected by climate change.

Ahmed Swapan from VOICE Bangladesh says: "Rich industrialised countries are responsible for the climate crisis, and they should be paying compensation for the damage they have caused. These loans will only increase our already huge debt burden, and repaying them will take money away from other vital areas, like health and education."

IMF APPOINTS 11TH EUROPEAN BOSS IN A ROW

Thank you to everyone who called on the final two candidates for head of the International Monetary Fund to answer to affected people around the world. Former French Finance minister Christine Lagarde has now become Managing Director, the eleventh consecutive European to hold the job, in a process that took place behind closed doors.

Contrary to some reports, Lagarde's experience does not bode well for the IMF's future approach on poverty and inequality. As French Finance Minister, she has pushed strongly for the costs of the European debt crisis to be shifted from banks to the public purse, and as chair of the G20 Finance Ministers, she has presided over the G20's flawed response to the financial crisis - missing a series of opportunities for global reforms that would put people first.

We’re sticking with our email action calling on her to face questions from people affected by the IMF's austerity policies until we get a response.
CHANNEL ISLANDS CONSIDER VULTURES LAWS

Good news in our campaign to stop Vulture Funds using UK Overseas Territories like the Channel Islands to profiteer from Third World debt.

Both Jersey and Guernsey have set up commissions to investigate the possibility of introducing the UK's Vulture Funds law, which restricts the ability of debt vultures to sue impoverished countries through the courts for huge profits.
Please make sure you’ve emailed the Chief Minister of Jersey to show the strength of support for this law.

GREEK DEBT DOC GOES VIRAL

It’s the debt documentary that has taken Greece by storm.
Made on a shoestring budget, millions of people in Greece and across Europe have watched it.

Debtocracy looks at the history of Greece's debt, and the different ways countries like Ecuador and Argentina have stood up for democratic control over national finances. It's an essential counterweight to the idea that banks should be able to lend irresponsibly and get away with it.

Holding a screening of Debtocracy with your group is a great way to discuss the implications of the European debt crisis, from Britain to the global South.
Over 200 people packed out our London premiere and Director Q&A this week. If you're interested in putting on a screening in your area, get in touch >>
