Job title/role in the city: The Beehive FairTrade Shop in Chapel Allerton(we've been closed over the summer but reopen 8th September)
What’s your mission?
We aim to sell a wider variety of fairly traded goods than is available in the Supermarkets. We sell teas, coffee, chocolate (lots!), rice, pasta, nuts, muesli, preserves, biscuits, cards, crafts. These are sourced mainly from Traidcraft.
We also supply Sale or Return stalls for groups-especially churches- to have on a regular or ad hoc basis.
We see it as part of our Christian commitment to promote Fair Trade because it assists people, mainly from Third World countries, who are excluded by unfair world trade rules, to make a living by bringing their produce and products to a wider audience.
What brought you to Leeds?
We are a home grown group of people from several church backgrounds in Leeds who voluntarily run a small retail shop in Chapel Allerton which was established in 2000.
What’s God doing with you in the city right now?
We have seen some increase in support from churches taking Fair trade goods on a Sale or Return basis. Some loyal customers show their commitment to Fair Trade by shopping with us regularly, but we need more!
How would you like to see Leeds change?
We would like to see everyone buy at least one Fair trade product a week!
What’s the best thing about Leeds?
It’s a Fair trade city.
Is there anything you need volunteers/funding for? How can people contact you or help your mission?
We need volunteers to help staff the shop. We are only able to open part-time at the moment due to a shortage of volunteers. Volunteers normally work 3 hour shifts either morning or afternoon.
We need more people to take stalls to their churches and communities, preferably on a regular basis.
We would also welcome help with improving our window and shop display.
