Olympic Initiatives
As the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics continues, churches and organisations across Leeds are gearing up for a summer of community engagement, mission and prayer. Several churches and organisations from across Leeds have been talking, dreaming and scheming and the following initiatives have come up from those conversations:
Kidz Klub Leeds
Kidz Klub Leeds reaches 'unchurched' children from inner city Leeds*. Kidz Klub is always in need of more people with a heart for children to join the team. A breakdown of Kidz Klub activities specifically on an Olympic theme:
- Weekly term time Kidz Klub Sessions in the city centre, LS11, Armley, Bramley and Middleton - Lunchtime clubs. Variety of topics across Leeds, right across the Summer term. - Assemblies. Variety of topics across Leeds, right across the Summer term. - Community Junctions. Community gatherings, Picnic Parties and more a variety of dates across the summer.
Kidz Klub will continue its other activities all over inner city Leeds, including its extensive home visiting, trips, creative arts groups, residentials and more.
* At present Kidz Klub reaches children in: Beeston, Holbeck, Cottingley, Burmantofts, Harehills, Gipton, Richmond Hill, Osmondthorpe, Little London, Woodhouse, Burley, Halton Moor, Armley and Bramley.
Olympic Torch Relay
The Olympic Torch will be passing through Leeds on the 24th and 25th June. This will be met by Leeds churches with 24 hours of prayer, and churches are planning community events to mark the torch’s route. Included in these are:
Wharfedale Vineyard are going to be involved with the council run event being put on at East End Park for the torch relay passing through.
Leeds Diocesan Youth Service will be involved in local celebrations as the torch passes through Headingley on the 24th June.
Olympics in Armley
Olympics themed fun day at Charlie Cake Park in Armley. There'll be sports themed games and a fun day from 2pm on Saturday 21 July 2012 run by churches and youth organisations from across Armley. As well as this there'll be a team working to clean up the streets of Armley through litter-picking and gardening. Then in the evening they'll be sports themed evangelistic event with pizza at Whingate Methodist Church.
South Leeds
Several churches and youth organisations LS10 and LS11 are running two Olympic themed fun days as part of Churches Together in South Leeds. We will be in Cottingley on 31st July, and Holbeck Moor on either 3rd of 4th August, 12 to 3pm, with sports competitions, crafts, and a bouncy castle amongst other things. We will also be hosting an evangelistic sports quiz at St Luke’s church on the evening of the 3rd or 4th August. Let the games commence!

These initiatives are only some of what is being planned across the city. Many other churches are planning events for this summer, we’re excited to see the church at the heart of a city celebrating sport and culture, bring on the summer!
