The Inaugural Hook Lecture was held at Leeds Parish Church on Thursday 17th November 2011

The first Hook Lecture was held on Thursday 17th November at Leeds Parish Church and was attended by around 250 people. Baroness Mary Warnock gave a lively and thought provoking lecture on ‘The Foundations of Morality’. She spoke of right and wrong, of its place in society and of the role of religion in morality describing the Parable of the Good Samaritan as the ‘greatest moral story of all time’

Baroness Warnock is one of Britain’s best-known thinkers on ethical issues. In 1984, she was the author of the report that formed the basis of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act. The most recent of her many books is Dishonest to God: On Keeping Religion out of Politics (2010), which puts forward controversial arguments for the separation of religion from morality. It was a theme she returned to in her lecture, suggesting that Bishops were 'in danger' of thinking of themselves as "moral experts".

This event was organised jointly by LCI, Leeds Parish Church and the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds in honour of Walter Farquhar Hook (1798-1875), a Vicar of Leeds who was passionately committed to supporting education and social welfare in the city. Dean Hook was the founder of Leeds Church Institute so starting this annual lecture is close to our hearts at LCI and we look forward to welcoming other high profile guest speakers in the future.
