Church outreach project attracts hundreds of visitors

For the last twelve months a Leeds church, Moortown Baptist Church, has been putting together a community outreach project which they called What Matters? The idea was simple: through contact with local schools, churches and community groups they invited individuals to take a photograph of someone, something or somewhere that really matters to them. Once captured, the image and an appropriate caption was emailed to MBC and posted to an on-line photowall. However, besides appearing on-line more than three hundred of the pictures were then printed out for inclusion in an enormous art exhibition. The outcome, MBC’s What Matters? weekend, saw more than three hundred people visit the church.

Rev’d Graham Brownlee, Senior Minister at MBC, described the weekend as “brilliant”.

“With subjects as diverse as brothers and sisters, pubs, pets and lego the people who submitted photos did so with great honesty. We also found that there were a number of recurring themes, things such as friends, the environment, little everyday things and having fun so we connected all these with short bits of scripture to show how as Christians we believe God plays a part in everything that matters.”

The weekend was divided into five separate mini events: a school’s preview session, an official launch at which Rt. Hon Fabain Hamilton MP for Leeds North East was guest of honour, a community open day and two specially planned community focussed services.
